“And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the Mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads. 

And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: 

And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.” 

Revelation 14:1-3

Why is the song said to be a new song? 

It will be a new song, because the saints were never in such a position before as they will be when they sing this new song. 

They are in heaven now; but the scene of our text is something more than heaven. It refers to the time when all the chosen race shall meet around the throne, when the last battle shall have been fought, and the last warrior shall have gained his crown. 

It is not now that they are singing, but it is in the glorious time to come, when all the hundred and forty and four thousand—or rather, the number typified by that number—will be all safely housed and all secure.

 I can conceive the period. 

Time was—eternity now reigns. 

The voice of God exclaims, “Are my beloved all safe?”

 The angel flies through paradise and returns with this message, “Yes, they are.” 

“Is Fearful safe? 

Is Feeble-mind safe? 

Is Ready-to-Halt safe?

 Is Despondency safe?” 

“Yes, O King, they are,” 

says he. “Shut the gates,” 

says the Almighty, “they have been open night and day;

 shut them now.” 

Then, when all of them shall be there, then will be the time when the shout shall be louder than many waters, and the song shall begin which will never end.

For meditation: 

The old year is about to be replaced by a new year, 

but that will soon grow old and fade away. 

Revelation speaks of the former things passing away (21: 4), and the old serpent being cast out and bound (12: 9 and 20: 2). All that remains is new and remains new throughout eternity—a new song, a new heaven, a new earth, new Jerusalem—all things new (21: 1-5).

God Only, You Can Trust 

"Peter answered and said unto him, 

Though all men shall be offended because of Thee, 

yet will I never be offended"   

(Matthew 26:33).

Why," cries one, "this is no promise of God."

 Just so, but it was a promise of man, and therefore it came to nothing. Peter thought that he was saying what he should assuredly carry out; but a promise which has no better foundation than a human resolve will fall to the ground. 

No sooner did temptations arise than Peter denied his Master and used oaths to confirm his denial. 

What is man's word? An earthen pot broken with a stroke. 

What is your own resolve? A blossom, which, with God's care, may come to fruit, but which, left to itself, will fall to the ground with the first wind that moves the bough. 

On man's word hang only what it will bear. On thine own resolve depend not at all. On the promise of thy God hang time and eternity, this world and the next, thine all and the all of all thy beloved ones. 

This volume is a checkbook for believers, and this page is meant as a warning as to what bank they draw upon and whose signature they accept. 

Rely upon Jesus without limit. 

Trust not thyself nor any horn of woman, beyond due bounds; but trust thou only and wholly in the LORD.

"Thy love is better than wine."

"Thy love is better than wine." 

- Song of Song of Solomon 1:2

Nothing gives the believer so much joy as fellowship with Christ. He has enjoyment as others have in the common mercies of life, he can be glad both in God's gifts and God's works; but in all these separately, yea, and in all of them added together, he doth not find such substantial delight as in the matchless person of his Lord Jesus.

 He has wine which no vineyard on earth ever yielded; he has bread which all the corn-fields of Egypt could never bring forth. Where can such sweetness be found as we have tasted in communion with our Beloved? In our esteem, the joys of earth are little better than husks for swine compared with Jesus, the heavenly manna. 

We would rather have one mouthful of Christ's love, and a sip of his fellowship, than a whole world full of carnal delights. What is the chaff to the wheat? What is the sparkling paste to the true diamond? What is a dream to the glorious reality? What is time's mirth, in its best trim, compared to our Lord Jesus in his most despised estate? If you know anything of the inner life, you will confess that our highest, purest, and most enduring joys must be the fruit of the tree of life which is in the midst of the Paradise of God. 

No spring yields such sweet water as that well of God which was digged with the soldier's spear. All earthly bliss is of the earth earthy, but the comforts of Christ's presence are like himself, heavenly. 

We can review our communion with Jesus, and find no regrets of emptiness therein; there are no dregs in this wine, no dead flies in this ointment. 

The joy of the Lord is solid and enduring. Vanity hath not looked upon it, but discretion and prudence testify that it abideth the test of years, and is in time and in eternity worthy to be called "the only true delight. 

" For nourishment, consolation, exhilaration, and refreshment, no wine can rival the love of Jesus.

 Let us drink to the full this evening.

Precious Things

Precious Things 

"And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, 

for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, 

and for the deep that coucheth beneath"   

(Deuteronomy 33:13).

We may be rich in such things as Joseph obtained, and we may have them in a higher sense. Oh, for "the precious things of heaven"! Power with God and the manifestation of power from God are most precious. 

We would enjoy the peace of God, the joy of the LORD, the glory of our God. The benediction of the three divine Persons in love, and grace, and fellowship we prize beyond the most fine gold. 

The things of earth are as nothing in preciousness compared with the things in heaven. 

"The dew." 

How precious is this! How we pray and praise when we have the dew! What refreshing, what growth, what perfume, what life there is in us when the dew is about' Above all things else, as plants of the LORD's own right hand planting, we need the dew of His Holy Spirit. 

"The deep that coucheth beneath."

 Surely this refers to that unseen ocean underground which supplies all the fresh springs which make glad the earth. 

Oh, to tap the eternal fountains!

 This is an unspeakable boon; let no believer rest till he possesses it. 

The all-sufficiency of Jehovah is ours forever.

 Let us resort to it now.
